Roberto GARCÍA YORK

Roberto was born in La Habana, Cuba in 1929, during the "Wall Street crash", while the Lagune of Venice was frozen and when André Breton published his second manifesto of Surrealism. Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali end their film : "An Andalusian Dog" : This was in 1929.

At the age of 14, Roberto realized his first design exhibition, and in 1953, his first painting exhibition. Since then he kept growing the number of his exhibition and fairs. Amongst other publications, he was first quoted as a painter in the Encyclopedia of Surrealism" from René Passeron. Several magazines published his work of interior architecture A self taught painter and engraver, as well as a wardrobe and interior designer, he went to live in Paris in 1964. His first solo exhibition took place there in 1972. He is known for his mix or fantasy and eroticism.

García York was artistic director of the Galerie l’Oeuf du Beaubourg in Paris and wardrobe designer for the Venice Carnival in Italy and the Festival Internationale du Film in Cannes. His first show – featuring designs of women’s fashions – took place in the Havana Lyceum in 1943. Since then, he has had many solo exhibitions at galleries and museums such as Galería Proteo in Mexico City, the Fondation Rosa de Grancher in Paris, Círculo 2 in Madrid and Galerie Forni in Amsterdam. Group exhibitions include the VI Biennial in Sao Paulo, 7 Peintres Surrealistes Cubains at Galerie Maya in Brussels, Artistes Latino Americains de Paris at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the First Surrealist Exhibition in Sao Paulo, and Le Fantastique Contemporaine, at the Galerie de L’Université in Paris. His work is represented in the permanent collection of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris. Roberto died in Paris on 26 January 2005.
